Cairo is the capital of Egypt, with a population of over 10 million. The historic part of the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
The city is located in the northeastern part of Egypt on the right bank of the Nile, immediately before the southern edge of the Nile Delta. The oldest parts of the city lie further from the river, while modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels rise along the Nile. Cairo also includes the Nile islands of Gezira and Rhodes. On the opposite west bank, Giza, with the world-famous pyramids on its edge, merges with Cairo.
The weather in Cairo corresponds to the city's continental location on the border of the tropical and subtropical belt, influenced by the proximity of the desert. The highest summer daytime temperatures reach up to 40 °C, while in winter the minimum night temperatures drop below 10 °C. Precipitation is very low and intense rain in the winter months occurs only exceptionally. A special feature of Cairo's weather is the so-called Khamsins, which occur during March and April. These are winds created as a result of a change in air flow over the desert, through which very hot desert air mixed with sand enters the city.
New Cairo is an Egyptian city with an area of about 30,000 hectares. New Cairo is one of the new cities that were built in and around Cairo to relieve traffic congestion in the center of Cairo. It was founded in 2000. The city could eventually host up to 5 million inhabitants.

Al-Azhar University is Cairo's most famous mosque. In 975, a university was founded at the mosque, which is the second oldest still functioning university in the world and still retains its reputation as the most important center for the study and interpretation of Islam, Islamic law and the teaching of classical Arabic.
The Khan al-Khalili Bazaar is the largest bazaar in Africa. On its northern edge are the remains of the original Wikala al-Bazar, founded in 1382 to accommodate foreign merchants and store goods. Today, a large part of the bazaar is full of goods and gold jewelry for tourists. Outside the main tourist routes, you can also find common goods such as clothing, dishes or food.
The Citadel is a large fortress. The most interesting building in the Citadel is the Alabaster Mosque built by Muhammad Ali, who is also buried here. The mosque also includes a clock tower, which was given to Muhammad Ali in 1846 by the French king Louis Philippe. Other important monuments of the Citadel include the Mosque of Sultan Nasir Muhammad, the only surviving Mamluk building in the Citadel, and the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, the first Ottoman-style building in Egypt. The former harem now houses the Egyptian National Military Museum, depicting Egypt's military history from the pharaohs to the rise of President Mubarak, with an outdoor display of tanks and aircraft.
The Egyptian Museum houses an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. Founded in 1858 by the Frenchman Auguste Mariette, the current building dates back to 1902. In more than fifty rooms, there are almost 130,000 different exhibits on display, from colossal statues to small jewelry, representing the history of ancient Egypt from its beginnings to the arrival of Islam. The collections include treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb, including his two golden coffins and the famous death mask. The museum is complemented by a park where you can see growing papyrus and lotus. In the western part of the park is Marietta's tomb and a monument to prominent Egyptologists.
The Cairo Tower is a 186 m high television and observation tower from 1961 in the shape of a lotus. It stands in a park on the Nile island of Gezira. A monumental portal with a wide entrance staircase made of Aswan pink granite introduces the entrance hall, which is decorated with colored windows and wall mosaics depicting traditional and contemporary scenes from the life of the people.
Old Cairo - Coptic City. It is a Christian quarter on the site of the original Roman fortress of Babylon, the excavations of which can be seen right next to the metro station. In the Coptic City there is a Greek monastery with the church of Mar Girgis (St. George), the churches of the Virgin Mary, St. Barbara, St. Sergius and the newly renovated Coptic Museum. In addition to these monuments, there are also a number of less important churches and Christian cemeteries under the administration of various churches (Coptic, Greek, Armenian).
