Data SIM card
There are three main operators in Egypt:
Vodafone
Etisalat
Orange
Where to buy a data SIM card in Egypt?
You have several options:
from home, via the internet
at a sales booth at the airport
directly from the operator
at the hotel (operator booths are often there)
at a delegate
in a shop directly at the hotel
If you buy at a hotel or through a delegate, you must expect a price surcharge. Double or even higher prices are not an exception. The advantage, however, is that if the card is not functional, you have somewhere to complain.
Briefly about Egyptian SIM cards
Definitely insist on a new SIM card that has not been broken out of its original packaging. There is a risk that someone has already used the card and it does not have the full amount of data required. It may also have a shorter validity period. Keep an eye on the seller at all times, especially if you let them insert your SIM card into your phone – it may happen that some crook will try to replace it with an older or partially used card.
Make sure you buy the right type. Data on SIM cards can sometimes be divided into two parts (not only in Egypt): 1. for browsing the regular internet and 2. for communication channels such as Messenger, WhatsApp and the like. You may then find that out of 5 GB, you can only use 3 GB for browsing the internet – the rest can only be used for communication applications.
